The Mid Sussex Working Spaniel Club proudly hosted its Annual Autumn Working Test on their superb training ground on Sunday 14th of September . With a total of 24 dogs in the Novice Stake and 13 in the Open Stake, the day saw a strong turnout of handlers and their talented spaniels, all set to demonstrate their ability and partnership in true sporting spirit.
Judging the competition were A Panel Judge Mr Gordon Bowers and Non-Panel Judge Mrs Debbie Robertson, who brought with them a wealth of experience and a keen eye for natural ability and good handling.
Set amidst classic bracken-covered ground, the tests were thoughtfully laid out to assess the dogs’ natural game-finding ability, marking, hunting drive, and steadiness — all key qualities for a working spaniel. The challenging terrain and thoughtful test design provided a fair but testing trial for both novice and open competitors, rewarding stylish, honest dog work and responsive handling.
The atmosphere throughout the day was one of camaraderie and sportsmanship, with both stakes running smoothly thanks to the dedication of the judges, helpers, and stewards. The club would like to extend its sincere gratitude to Skinners Dog Food for their continued and generous sponsorship, the catering team for keeping everyone refreshed, our landowner for the privilege of using such excellent ground, and to the committee and volunteers who worked tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure the event’s success.
Prize-giving took place at the close of the day and was presented by the Club’s General Secretary and Treasurer, with awards given to those dogs and handlers who truly shone in their respective stakes.
The Mid Sussex Working Spaniel Club wishes to thank all competitors for their support and excellent sportsmanship, and we look forward to welcoming everyone for the forthcoming trials for more high-quality competition in the field.
